U20 World Cup (F): Nigeria offers France, Ghana misses out

Costa Rica hosts the U20 Women’s World Cup on August 10 – 28. Nigeria, the two-time finalists, won their first match against France (1-0). Ghana was the second representative from Africa, but they lost to the United States (3-0).

Nigeria gets off to a great start U20 Women’s World CupCosta Rica. France was stunned by the Super Falconets (1-0) in the first day’s Group C. Both teams played under extreme weather conditions at San Jose National Stadium. Even the meeting was interrupted on the 21eMinute for almost an hour.

The reigning African champions proved to be dangerous after a scoreless first period. They struggled to find the problem. Flourish Sabastine took 85 minutes to give Nigeria the lead. This was enough to hand the French their first defeat in a match in a group in this U20 Women’s World Cup. Nigeria will take on South Korea (2-0) in the second match at 8 PM GMT.

Nigeria is among four countries that have participated in every Under-20 Women’s World Cup since its creation 20 years ago. The Super Falconets made it to the final two times (2010 and 2014). But they lost to Germany’s women’s soccer superpower Germany each time.

United States sweeps Ghana

Ghana, on the contrary, was the other representative from the black continent. The Black Princesses, three-time champions of the world, were swept away by the United States (3-0). Ghana finished the match at 10. Jacqueline Owusu, who was expelled at the 31eMinute of play. Evelyn Badu’s team finds another chunk in Japan, the reigning world champions, for their second outing at 5 p.m. GMT.

Ghana has never reached the group stage in five appearances at the U20 Women’s World Cup. The task is expected to be challenging for the Black Princesses of Costa Rica.
