APR rule out U-turn on foreign players policy

Chairman of APR’s local giants, Lieutenant General Mubarakh Muganga has dismissed any suggestion that the club would change its policy of using only home-grown players.

Critics say that APR’s policy, which has been in effect since 2013, has made APR ineffective in continental and regional competitions. But club officials insist that it gives Rwandan athletes a chance to shine.

Muganga presided at a ceremony to unveiled new players in advance of the season. He stressed that APR will not sign foreign players during his administration.

“Before dropping that policy (of not recruiting foreign players), I will step down early,” said Muganga, who is also the Army Chief of Staff.

“Non-Rwandan players will not come back to APR during my chairmanship.”

Despite the poor results on the continent, APR has maintained the local scene, winning seven league titles, two Peace Cups, and two Super Cups over the past ten years.

APR management has assigned Adil Mohamed Erradi, the Moroccan head coach, to lead the club to the group stages of the 2022/23 Caf Champs League, an achievement that no other Rwandan side has achieved.

The army side will kick off their Champions League campaign against Tunisia’s US Monastir on the weekend of September 9-11.
