West African leaders lift sanctions on Mali
West African leaders announced the lifting sanctions against Mali’s military regime.
The Economic Community of West African States’ heads of state met in Accra to accept a proposal by the Malian military for elections and civilian rule by March 2024.
After two coups staged by army officers within a year, the bloc imposed crippling economic sanctions.
It also accepted a two year timetable for the restoration democracy in Burkina Faso. However, it told Guinea, a third nation which witnessed a military coup, that it would face economic sanctions unless it could accelerate its proposed three-year transition to democracy.
