The United Nations Mission in South Sudan is deeply concerned at reports of violence in Fashoda County in Upper Nile State. This violence has been reported between Nuer elements and Shilluk-armed youth. Many civilians are being affected by the fighting, with reports of more displacements into Malakal or Kodok towns, where tensions and volatility persist.

Tensions between different groups have caused sporadic violence and displacement in these areas since August 2022. The Mission appeals to the government authorities, key community leaders and elders from both Shilluk- and Nuer groups in Jonglei, Upper Nile states to use their influence to stop violence and prevent more civilian suffering.

UNMISS is further urging the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces, SSPDF, based in Kodok town to intervene urgently to de-escalate the violence.

The Mission appeals that those who mobilize youth for violence in both community and country to stop it. Instead, they should embrace peaceful means to resolve any grievance.

UNMISS also urges the IDP population at the Malakal POC to show restraint and not be drawn into the latest outbreak of violence. We are certain that those who continue to murder innocent civilians and abuse them will face consequences.

The Mission continues to protect humanitarian access, establish temporary operational bases, and intensify patrols around hotspots to deter violence. UN personnel will continue to work alongside political and traditional leaders to promote intercommunal dialogue and confidence-building and support efforts towards reconciliation.
