Mogadishu, (SONNA) – Over 30 Somali Journalists and some selected Editors have begun a three-day training on Humanitarian and Climate Change reporting in Mogadishu today. The Media Training was organized and conducted by the Somali Independent Media Houses Association.

The training will equip editors and journalists with skills and knowledge to report on the unfolding humanitarian crisis as well as the impacts of Climate Change on Somalia.

Speaking at the training kick-off in Mogadishu, SIMHA’s Chairman Hassan Ali Geesey said the training would help the Journalist identify and report on Humanitarian stories.

“The media is the vehicle that delivers crucial information to the public. We believe that journalists and editors need to be trained on how to report on the current humanitarian crisis in Somalia. It is timely, and we hope this will help shape the opinion and views of Somali people and their international supporters through accurate reporting,”Chairman SIMHA

Hassan Ali Geesey is the Somali Independent Media Houses organization (SIMHA).

UNSOM and Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, the Special Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs (SEH), support the media training that will be held in the major cities of the region states over the next few weeks.

“Without the support of UNSOM and the Office of the Special Envoy, it would not have been possible to implement this training”, Added Mr Hassan Geesay.

While officially opening the training, the Special Envoy on Humanitarian Affairs, Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, emphasized on the media’s role in positively highlighting the challenges caused by Climate Change and its impact.

“As Journalists and Editor, today you can support your people suffering from the continuous impact of climate-induced tragedies. You must be the first to highlight the daily challenges that our people face.” said the special envoy.

“You are the vehicle we need to deliver the message, and without you, we will never know the extent of the damage and how much help we need”The special envoy said so. The special envoy warned Journalists about fake news and its devastating impact.

“As Journalists, you must always strive to get the truth. Your job is to inform the public using accurate information. Our goal is to train more than 200 journalists. Journalists from the five Regional States” said the special envoy.

The Journalists and Editors who were selected for the training were thrilled.

After the training, I hope to have a clear understanding of how I can report on Humanitarian matters and the impact of Climate Change. I am passionate about Humanitarian issues and eager to play my role of journalist.,” said Shukri Mohamed Abdi, a reporter at Bilan Media.

Somalia is currently in the worst humanitarian crisis after its failed rainy season. As the country moves closer to famine declaration, more than 50% of its population will need food assistance.

This crucial step of training journalists and media managers will allow the media to accurately and objectively present the situation, highlighting the voices and suffering from the climate-induced tragedies.
