Fillemon Mweya (NAMIBIAN boxing referee/judge) has a broader international resume after he was appointed to officiate at the highly-publicized World Boxing Council Dubai event.

The main attraction of the evening was Floyd Mayweather, former world champion, taking on Deji Olagnji, YouTuber. This exhibition crossover boxing match took place at the Coca-Cola Arena. According to Mweya, it was packed to 17 000 capacity. Mweya also officiated in seven other fights.

“I am so excited that I could officiate at such a high-class event – the Arena was packed to capacity, it was just like Las Vegas,” he said.

“I gained a lot of experience from that fight and I would like to share it with every Namibian who is willing to become a professional boxing referee/judge. We had seven WBC title fights, of which I refereed one and judged six, so I got some fantastic experience,” he added.

“I rubbed shoulders with the former multiple world champion Floyd Mayweather who went head-to-head with YouTuber Deji in a hotly-anticipated return to the city. It left the YouTube personality and gamer, often better known by the online moniker Comedy Shorts Gamer, disappointed but also proud as he did manage to bruise the American,” he said.

Tyson Fury’s brother Tommy Fury competed in a support bout. Other boxing champions, including multiple female champion Claressa Schields, attended the event.

Mweya also met his mentor and inspiration, Kenny Bayless. Bayless is an internationally renowned referee and judge in boxing.

“I was very happy to finally meet Kenny Bayless – we only used to chat on whatsApp, but now it became a reality. Kenny has inspired me so much and I have learnt a lot from him,” he said.

“I would like extend my gratitude to the World Boxing Council for the opportunity they gave me and I now hope to officiate in Las Vegas in the future,” he added.
