After heavy rains on Wednesday, several homes and entire homesteads in Oshikunde in Ohangwena province were destroyed.

Sylvia Nangolo (41), from Oshikunde, said that she had been praying for rain.

Nangolo, narrating to The Namibian about the storm, said that it all happened Wednesday afternoon at 17h00. The winds picked up and it soon became hail and rain. It got so intense that we had to run and hide inside. The terror grew because the structures were being torn from the foundation while we were inside. We had to hold onto everything we could – the furniture and beds. It all happened in a matter of five minutes. It was like the walls were falling apart and the roofs fell off. Then it stopped.

Five households were severely affected. Seven households were affected.

Paulina Hembala’s homestead saw all four of its structures, including the huts, destroyed.

“I must start over. My children and other family members will soon return home for the holiday season. However, they will not have any roofs to cover their heads. Our roofing sheets were blown by the wind. Hembala said that you can see some of them hanging from trees far away.”

Lornia Shinana from Oshikunde, a councillor for the constituency, appealed to good Samaritans for assistance to the affected families.

“We have families whose houses were destroyed by the storm. Our people are left homeless. They need to rebuild their homes and repair the damage to their food. Shinana appealed to Shinana, “Good Samaritans! We are asking you to help.”
