Col. Aissimi Goita, President of the Transition in Mali, appointed Wednesday the 15 members of the country’s independent election body known as Autorité Indépendante de Gestion des Elections (AIGE).

After talks and national dialogue, the AIGE was formed in September 2021. This was in response to the establishment of an independent body responsible for organizing elections in West African countries.

According to Anadolu news agency Anadolu, the appointment of the AIGE member comes after a protest by Malian citizens coalition for independent observation in elections in Mali (COCEM).

The coalition on Monday regretted the delay in the appointment of the body’s members. It also stated that the AIGE, per the electoral law to be in operation since September 19, was expected to start operating and has been given the task of organizing a Mars 19 referendum next year.

Malians were due to vote for their legislative representatives in February of this year, but the elections were postponed to next March.

The AIGE members consist of 3 representatives of head of state, 1 representative of Prime Minister, 2 representatives of National Transition Council, One from High Council of Collectivities, 3 members of the Political Parties, and 3 members of Civil Society.
