FECOFOOT election: Author of a mixed record, Mayolas in search of legitimacy

“The federation has no problem with old glories. Ex-players are not exempted from the race for the headship of the federation. Jean Guy Blaise Mayolas (president of FECOFOOT), spoke in this manner on August 24, Pointe-Noire. It was during exchanges between former Congolese footballers who reside in the economic capital. It was a thinly disguised reference to the release by a group of old glories that recently denounced the rejection by the electoral commission of their applications to FECOFOOT authorities for ‘non-compliance to the statutes’’.

“Indeed, we have no problems with President Mayolas. I find it surprising that he is being accused of designing texts for his measure. These statutes have been in existence since 2013. If there are provisions that pose a problem, we should not wait until the eve of an election to raise the debate”, defended Janvion Moukakounou, former member of Inter Club de Brazzaville and today technical director within the Kouilou departmental football league. This is the opinion of the former glories that had made the trip south to Pointe-Noire’s Le Ruisseau hotel. This is the case with Sebastien LakouChrist Bongo and Hidalgo Poaty are Emmanuel Mboungou.

“55%” of objectives achieved

These excuses were a week before elective general meetings. They were also a pretext for Jean Guy Blaise Mayolas in order to defend his record. He had met with club presidents and Kouilou football league members the day before. “In an exhaustive manner, we have carried out management, a modernization and recruitment of competent personnel, the organization’s organization has a better organization, etc.” We can read the brochure in which the candidate Mayolas summarizes his achievements over the past four year and indicates that he has achieved “55%”, of the 2018 goals he set.

Football players recognize these acts. “Indeed, it has relaunched the training of executives and coaches. Myself, I’m a FIFA coach. Charles Mbuya, Canal+’s audiovisual journalist training instructor, was a big help to us. There are many other achievements,” recalls Janvion Moukakounou.

“Mixed results”

However, there are still many achievements that are not enough. It’s a mixed record. We were promised a subsidy in excess of 10 million FCFA. But this year ; we only received 5,” laments a club president on condition of anonymity. “For my part, I deplored the fact that the federation did not help us to solve the problem of transport and accommodation of the players during the outings. Indeed, we continue to transport ourselves by road, whereas we should travel by plane according to the requirements of international authorities, ”complains Olivier Mombo-Ibouili, president of AS V.Club Mokanda in Pointe-Noire. Mombo-Ibouili recognizes, however, positive points of the mandate of Jean Guy Blaise Mayolas. “It was he who relaunched competitions for young people like the U 17s. That hasn’t been seen in this country for a long while. And I think it will continue, ”he hopes.

FECOFOOT was not above reproach at the managerial level. Last April, for example, attacking midfielder Delvin Ndinga denounced on RFI antennas “schemes and lies” on the part of federation officials. Congolese officials denied the allegations. What flops! As in the non-qualification for the 2022 World Cup team and CAN 2023 national team, as well as early exclusion of clubs from international competitions.

The trap of the general assembly

However, some voters minimize disappointments. “These are events that happen. Congolese football is in full reconstruction”, positive Janvion Moukakounou. Like him, many Congolese football elite members appreciate the “Dynamique2022-2026”, Mayolas new action program. One of its strengths is “the consolidation and maintenance of rigorous management”.

While we wait for September 2’s elective general meeting, it is a real campaign where the ex-executive of the public treasurey will have made the small dishes big. The Ivorians would not suggest that you go to war with any challenger. It is more about having a general assembly with him, which, as a sovereign entity, could issue very prejudicial conditions. This would allow him the popular anointing and legitimacy that many putschists long for.
