Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) and Monastir (Tunisia) host the fourth qualifying window for the 2023 Basketball World Cup

In 2019, Tunisia, Nigeria, Senegal, Angola and Côte d’Ivoire represented Africa at the World Cup in China. Four years later, the five countries are on different paths in qualifying for 2023 World Cup. Overall, we are witnessing a leveling of values with teams like South Sudan, Cape Verde and Egypt challenging the supremacy of these big cars of African basketball by their track record.

Three matches away from happiness

Housed in Group E, Côte d’Ivoire (8 pts) can qualify from this window if they win their three matches, against Nigeria, Cape Verde and Uganda. The Palais des Sports de Treichville is the venue where the Elephants can play. These qualifications were a success and they are the favorites in this group.

South Sudan (12 pts) is the leader in group F and will need three wins to secure a historic qualification for World Cup. The President Luol deng’s team was full during both the second- and third windows. She will confirm ahead of Senegal and DR Congo, as well as Egypt.

Egypt, Cape Verde Tunisia, Tunisia, and DRC are all on the watch

Egypt (11 pts +141), second in group F, must win four of their six remaining games to claim shelter and validate their ticket. These qualifiers have seen only one loss for the Pharaohs. It was against Senegal (75-77, 2nd Window, February). They will have to work hard against Tunisia and Cameroon as well as South Sudan.

Fourth in Afrobasket 2021 Cape Verde (7 point) is second in Group A. The Blue Sharks currently hold the right end. They can qualify by holding on to their second place at Abidjan’s tournament. Cape Verde needs four wins in the two remaining windows in order to qualify for the World Cup.

Tunisia (10 +7 pts) is the current African champion and holds its destiny in her hands. She must win the six remaining games to be in the running. Two points behind South Sudan are the Carthage Eagles.

The Leopards (10 pts), after their disappointing Afrobasket, have a chance to bounceback and qualify for this year’s World Cup. It plays a solid tournament in Monastir to catch up to the front runners of group F, which is dominated by South Sudanese and Egypt. Jonathan Kuminga is a former NBA champion and could be a source of support for DR Congo. The 19-year old winger is currently in Tunisia as part of the Leopards and already has his Congolese passport.

Senegal, Angola, and Nigeria are “big” in danger

These three giants of African men’s basketball have a terrible start. Senegal, which is trying to qualify for the third consecutive title, is currently in fifth place in group A. The Lions are now back at the wall and must leave Monastir with at least two wins out of three.

Angola (6 points +33) and Nigeria (6 points +28) are both in the same situation. The two teams share group A. They will meet on Sunday, August 28, in a meeting that will be crucial for their survival in these qualifications.

Angola, Senegal, and Nigeria were present at China’s last World Cup.

Mission impossible…

Cameroon (7 points -27), Uganda (5 points -51) or Guinea (4 points -56) will need to win their six matches (windowed 4, 5 and 56) to qualify. It will be a miracle for these three teams to reach the finals in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The World Cup will be won by the two best teams in each group plus the third best.
