Commonwealth Games: Africa collects 117 medals

At the Commonwealth Games Birmingham, medals were awarded to thirteen African countries. The dark continent has enjoyed a good harvest with 117 metals.

Nigeria was ranked among the Top 10 in the world. medal table. Nigeria is seventh in the list of top African nations. The Nigerians won 35 medals, including 12 golds, 9 silvers and 14 bronze. Nigeria was the best in weightlifting and wrestling. The Nigerian athletes were especially impressive. Tobi Amusan won the 100m hurdles gold with a new Games record (12s30). The same goes for Ese Brume at the long jump (7m00). The podium was also topped by the women’s 4X100 relay team from Nigeria.

These Commonwealth Games saw South Africa shine. The Rainbow Nation won 27 medals including seven gold, nine bronze and nine silver. She was ninth in the medal table. South Africans have shone in swimming, athletics, boxing, rugby 7, judo…. With 18 charms, Chad le Clos was the most decorated athlete of all time at the Games. He won silver in 100m butterfly.

The African top three is completed by Kenya. Kenya won 21 metals, including 6 golds, 5 silvers and 10 bronze. Kenya has received almost all of its medals for athletics, keeping true to its reputation. He still retained two bronze charms in weightlifting. The stars of the country, Mary Mora (800m), Ferdinand Omanyala (100m), Abraham Kibiwot (3000m steeplechase), Béatrice Chebet (5000m) were present.

Uganda, Cameroon and Zambia stand out

These Commonwealth Games saw Uganda not be outdone. Joshua Cheptegei’s country won five charms, including three in gold as well as two in bronze. These charms were won by Ugandans in boxing and athletics. Jacob Kiplimo won the 10,000m, 5kilom double and Victor Kiplangat won the marathon gold.
