Wednesday saw Mustafa Sanalla challenge Tripoli-based PM Abdulhamid Dbiebah when he visited the headquarters the National Oil Corporation (NOC). He claimed that the Premier was illegal because his mandate had expired.
NOC posted photos on social media showing Sanalla being met by security personnel and employees of the company.
In a speech, he reportedly Sanalla said Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah’s mandate had expired and he did not have the authority to dismiss him as head of the state energy producer.
After the speech, an armoured force was deployed to the NOC Headquarters.
Wednesday’s news broke earlier that Dbeibah had fired both the NOC chairman and the entire board. Last month, Oil Minister Mohamed Aoun, who has been at open war with Sanalla, requested that the entire board be removed.
Since May 2014, Sanalla has been the NOC’s leader. Due to rivalries between different Libyan parties, he has been able to stay in the company’s realm.
