EUROPE/ITALY: Sisters spokespersons to the most marginalized community to be at the centre of the international discussion on development

Thursday, 14th of July 2022

Rome (Agenzia Fides) – The International Union of Superiors General (UISG) has released the second video of the campaign “New Leaders: Sisters Advocating Globally “, to highlight the commitment to tackling the world’s most pressing development challenges. The final statement of the video summarizes the message of the video: “We’re your Sisters: We are committed to advocating on your behalf and with you, in a journey of care and concern for people and the environment.”
As the note from the UISG sent to Fides informs, this month’s video features Sisters who are striving to bring the voices of the world’s most marginalised communities into the centre of the development dialogue. Sisters are leading the movement to change global discussions around the needs of the most neglected communities, as world leaders become more aware of the importance of developing solutions that are inclusive of and tailored to the most vulnerable.
Sisters Advocating Globally is the name of UISG’s advocacy project, launched in 2020 with support from the Global Solidarity Fund (GSF). The project has enabled Sister-led networks of congregations and Sister-led networks to increase their advocacy focus. This shifts their development model from a needs-based, responsive model to one that includes a search for structural, systematic solutions that engage decision-makers at all levels. This is one response to Pope Francis’ appeal for “real change, structural change”, as he decries a system “that has imposed a mentality of profit at any price, with no concern for social exclusion or the destruction of nature” (July 10th, 2015).
