The victim of a network traffickers, the young woman was beaten and tortured to death in 2018, at the home where she worked. Doctors found that the girl had been subject to daily abuse and violence. Ambika Shan, 62-year-old, was the woman with which the young woman served. She was accused of killing Adelina Liso. However, on June 23, 2022, the Federal Court of Malaysia acquitted her and released her.
The sentence quickly attracted sharp criticism from Indonesian civil society, particularly among those who support human rights and the rights for migrants, such as Fr. Jesuit priest. Ignazio Ismartono SJ (and Sister Laurentina SDP), who have become icons for their resistance to the violence against migrants and human trafficking practices, are both Ignazio Ismartono SJ. Fr. Fr. Ismartono SJ joined Sister Laurentina SDP in the so-called Indonesian Coalition in Search of Justice for Adelina
Fides was told by the Jesuit priest, “Our humanity cannot accept such an acquittal.”
Sister Laurentina said that the Coalition expressed its concern and asked the Indonesian government the diplomatic steps necessary to resolve the case and seek justice. She notes that “we also need to review professional and commercial cooperation agreements between our two countries on migrant worker problems”. Fides stressed that Sister Laurentina stressed that it is difficult to seek justice for the migrant workers who have died.
The Migrant Protection Office of Indonesian Foreign Ministry also criticised the recent ruling. It said that it “clouds efforts for justice”. Even if the judicial proceedings have ended, we will still look for another way to file a suit in a different manner,” stated the Migrant Protection Office. (MH) (Agenzia Fides, 14/7/2022)
