After more than 8 000 cases and 66 Hepatitis-E deaths in 2017, the ministry for health and social services announced Wednesday that the outbreak was under control.

“It is my pleasure to inform the nation and to declare the Hepatitis E outbreak in Namibia has ended,” said health minister Kalumbi Shangula.

Hepatitis E cases in all regions have decreased significantly since the fourth quarter of 2020.

Shangula says that the Windhoek and Walvis Bay districts were the last to report the cases.

He said that the spread of the virus within the body is what defines the acute phase of a viral outbreak.

Transmission of information from one person into another is a way to build communities.

Shangula stated that the ministry will investigate any new cases promptly and thoroughly in order to respond in a timely manner and in compliance with public health prescriptions.

“The ministry of health and social services expresses gratitude to stakeholders for the concerted efforts to bring the Hepatitis E outbreak in our country to an end,” Shangula said, further acknowledging the efforts of health care workers.
