Peter Oscar Nabulindo, Matungu Member to Parliament, asked that the government increase the number slots for teachers to be hired. He noted that Kakamega still has a shortage of teachers which affects educational standards.

He also requested that the Commission give priority to teachers who are unemployed or have been tarmacked for a long time since they graduated from other institutions of learning.

“I urge the commission to be fair and transparent in the recruitment exercise that is set to begin. As MPs we shall continue to ask the government to employ more teachers in our public schools to relieve parents from paying extra levies to cater for salaries of teachers employed by school boards of management (BOMs),” he said.

The MP spoke during the flagging off students supported to join Technical Vocational and Training institutions (TVET) from Matungu constituency by his own initiative. Mashinani Initiative meant to improve literacy levels and empower constituents.

The program was a success for at least 185 students. He also asked parents to let their children participate. He also requested that head teachers release certificates for students to help them join TVETs.

In 2022, 200 students participated in the same program. According to the Director of Mashinani Initiative Johnson Wamukoya, they also source for funds from other funders by submitting proposals.

Mashinani Initiative was started in 2016 by the MP who is the patron. Its goals are to improve Matungu’s educational level, help vulnerable families, and monitor the social economic well-being of the people.

“The MP through the Mashinani Initiative is working round the clock to reduce the poverty index in the constituency and to improve the health status of constituents,” he noted.

Through the initiative, the MP built 40 houses and helped 700 students from the constituency join TVET institutions. He stated that they aim to support more than 2000 students.

The MP also asked for the National Government to increase allocations of the National Government Constituency Development Fund. (NG-CDF) because he expects more that Sh30 million in support students from the Matungu Constituency.

“This year, we are only receiving a paltry Sh5 million which is not enough to support students from even a Ward only, but we shall be fair in the distribution of the resources we get from the government. The Funds will go towards supporting the most vulnerable students,” he added.

He also assured Matungu residents, that they have obtained Namberekea land for a TVET Centre and support from the National government over the next three year.
