Morocco, along with the United States of America, Italy, United Nations, and the European Union, is co-organizing a three day meeting under the theme capacity building in nuclear forensics. It will be followed up by a Med Trident Simulator Exercise.

The meeting, which took place in Rome on November 9-11, is part the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism.

RedouaneHoussaini, a senior official from the Moroccan Foreign Department, said that Morocco has always worked in the fight against terrorism within the framework effective and active multilateral collaboration. This was based on the unique experience it has in this field.

The Moroccan diplomat stressed that in this context, it was necessary to update the security context of Mediterranean in the battle against nuclear terrorist. He also stressed the importance of taking into consideration the interference of foreign powers within the region, who act through proxies. He also highlighted the close connections between terrorist groups, separatists, and networks of organized cross border crime.

This analytical grid should be able to see beyond the dichotomy among states and non state actors in order to better understand the growing ties between the two groups of actors in the assessment for risks related to nuclear terrorist attacks.

Houssaini stated in this context that the dangers posed in the evolution of these groups’ modus operandi accentuate the risk for acts of nuclear terrorist, especially in the Mediterranean region, which is an important strategic corridor for international trade.

The Moroccan official also deplored the geopolitical context of the Mediterranean, marked by the persistence of several “blind spots” of sub-regional cooperation, especially in the Maghreb.
