The UN is  committed to fighting the climate emergency based on what science tells us.  To reach the 1.5 degree Paris agreement goal, global emissions must be reduced by 45% by 2030 to get on the path to achieving it. Developed countries and countries with the capability and capacity must lead the transition towards a decarbonized global economy. They also need to support developing countries with technology and finance.

The Paris Agreement makes it clear that each country’s transition path will be unique and based on their national circumstances. Both reducing emissions and providing energy access for the 800 million people who are not able to do so must be pursued with equal urgency.

As the Secretary General has repeatedly stated, the UN is committed to a fair, equitable, and just transition to renewable energy. This is the only way to ensure energy security, access to energy, and energy security for all. Gas may be used in transition in certain cases and on a case-by-case basis. However, governments must have clear exit plans within the framework of a national strategy to reach net zero according to the 1.5 degree Paris Agreement goal. For example, gas could play a major part in some developing countries’ transition to a net zero future if they have the necessary infrastructure and resource. All other countries would have to develop new fossil fuel infrastructure, which would create billions of stranded assets for future generations.
