THIRTY-YEAR-OLD Martha Ndegapo was crowned this year’s winner of the Shoprite & Checkers Namibian Champion Boerewors Competition.

Ndegapo was declared the winner at an event at Checkers Maerua Mall in Windhoek last week.

Shoprite & Checkers shopping vouchers worth N$300 000 were handed out at the event.

Ndegapo took home a Shoprite & Checkers shopping voucher valued at N$150 000, second-placed Fioline Kamavei received a N$100 000 voucher and third-placed Emily Tjitunga received a N$50 000 voucher.

The first boerewors competition took place in 2010 to preserve the tradition of authentic boerewors. This is a unique South African food.

Ndegapo stated last week that this is her third year participating in this competition. She won the third prize in 2020 and 2019.

“I kept entering because I believed I would win. I believe in persevering because you never know where your luck will take you. I love boerewors, and I’m so proud to have succeeded. This opportunity was a blessing. My life will never be the same again,” she said.

Ndegapo stated that she will open a restaurant in December with her prize, selling homemade dishes like chips, raisins, and fried fish.

Facilitator Sanet Prinsloo said that they have seen over the years how the competition has made people’s lives better.

“Once again, the competition has enriched the lives of Namibians. We receive more entries every year and the quality of the recipes is excellent. We are ready to do it all again,” Prinsloo said.

The boerewors were available at all Checkers and Shoprite outlets across the country at a special N$99,99/kg price. The promotion was over on 2 October.
