NAMIBIA reached the final four of the Running World Cup’s largest mass participation event, the Running World Cup, for the second year running.

With over 700 000 entries from around the globe in this year’s virtual marathon and more than 3,4 Million km already run, Namibia has once again advanced to this weekend’s finals. They will face South Africa, Mongolia, and Ukraine to determine who will win the 2022 Pro Direct Running World Cup.

Namibia came in second place last year behind South Africa in the free to enter open-to all tournament. This tournament is intended for an environmentally-friendly future.

Participants can track every kilometre they run by using a companion app for their smartphone or their wearable device.

The Vitality Running World Cup guarantees zero participant road or air miles, unlike other major events.

The 2022 tournament is now in its fourth edition. Participants who run 3km in under 30 mins will be eligible for points.

Each country has a country captain, such as Usain Bolt in Jamaica and Timothy Cheriyot in Kenya. Meanwhile, Gabriel Ikena (Instagram, @gabiikena), is Namibia’s 2022 Country Captain.

“I’m so happy to see fellow Namibians running for a common purpose,” he said.

The leaderboard currently shows Ukraine at the top, with thousands of people joining the effort despite the fact that they are fighting a war. Namibia has risen to the top in recent days.

Running World Cup founder UK social entrepreneur Nick Beresford said: “The Running World Cup gives everyone – no matter their ability – a chance to run for their country and be a part of the world’s largest mass participation event without degrading the environment. Running together virtually gives us a glimpse into what the future holds for international sports tournaments. It is great to see Namibia making the final again, this is whole point of the tournament where smaller nations can compete with larger nations and in turn get more people running.”
