AMERICA/ARGENTINA: “Responsible Parenthood” does NOT mean harming the dignity and freedom of the person

Ans

Buenos Aires, (Agenzia Fides). – Promoting responsible parenthood “should not allow for methods that undercut the dignity of the individual, that limit human freedom or that make decision for people who haven’t reached the maturity necessary to make irreversible changes.” The Family of the Argentine Bishops Conference, the Episcopal Commission on Life, the Laity, and the Family of Argentine Churches’ Conference are concerned by the Ministry of Health’s new advertisement campaign aimed at adolescents and young adults about access to virtually irreversible methods of contraception.
Fides was sent a statement expressing the fear of the Episcopal Commission. It stated that the “progressive weakening conscience about life and human condition” is the reason for the Commission’s concern. This happens whenever abortion and other controversial issues are on the public agenda. The declaration stresses that this weakening will result in the reduction of the human condition to its material aspect, which is regulated only by efficiency criteria that are based on data and sometimes only statistical. “The existence of a person and his transcendence is not taken into account, and the dignity, of the excluded and the poor, the sick, and of the unborn is dangerously unknown.”
The Episcopal Commission referred to the Ministry of Health’s advertisement campaign that targets young people. It suggested that we might ask ourselves why young people can’t plan a life, why they have difficulty living their sexuality, or why they are afraid to have children. “Much must still be done” – concludes this text. We need to provide better living conditions, education and security so that young people can realize their deep desire to live a dignified and fulfilled life. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 8/10/2022)
