Safaricom launches service in Ethiopia – New Business Ethiopia

Safaricom Ethiopia PLC, the new entrant to Ethiopia’s telecom service officially launched today its services in the capital, Addis Ababa and six more town.

Safaricom joined the market after paying an $850m license fee to Ethiopian Government and investing another $300 million. It is the second telecom operator operating in Ethiopia.
Officials from Safaricom stated that the company will continue to invest approximately 300 million annually in order to expand its services across Ethiopia over the next few years.

It was revealed that Safaricom has a line that starts with the 07 digit. This is a significant number of people who have received Safaricom lines since its launching. More than 600 people have found work with the company, of which 200 are expats. The company aims to create one million jobs over the next ten years, directly and indirectly.

The fiber optics provided by Ethio Telecom, the state-owned telecom company and approximately one percent of the towers are being used by the company. According to company officials briefed by the media, the company also uses its own infrastructures and towers.

Mobile money: SafaricomThe Kenyan official who launched M-pesa in Kenya is well-known for his contributions to the world. Officials said they are currently in discussions with the government to obtain the license in Ethiopia.
