Immediately after the September 20th declaration of an Ebola outbreak in Uganda in the country’s central Mubende district, the Ministry of Health has asked Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders to support its efforts in the fight against the spread of the disease.

A MSF team consisting of six people, mostly logisticians and doctors, traveled to Mubende on Wednesday 21 Sept to assess the condition and needs of the regional referral center where the first case was discovered.

MSF has been working with the Mubende hospital to establish an Ebola isolation, treatment and treatment centre. We are also looking into the possibility of opening a second centre in Madudu, 25km north. This is the area where the first Ebola victim died and several cases have been reported. The current priority is to improve patient care. MSF is currently assembling a team consisting of epidemiologists, logisticians and medical personnel with experience in managing hemorhagic fever cases. They should be ready to begin work next week. The Ministry of Health has the option to continue to intervene if necessary.

The country’s last Ebola outbreak was in 2019. MSF intervened in Uganda to assist the health authorities in managing people who were in contact with confirmed cases. The establishment of an Ebola treatment center was also established.
