EUROPE/MALTA: Soccer schools “workshops” for missionary animation

Valletta (Agenzia Fides – Soccer schools and the mission, as well as a “sock-ball”, a ball made with “socks”, which is the most varied recycled material, will be the key elements to the “Socktober” initiative. This was possible thanks to the collaboration between Missio Malta, the Maltese Pontifical Mission Societies, the Maltese Football Federation, and the Inhobb il-Futbol Foundation.
The “Socktober,” an initiative started in Australian schools, has now reached Malta. It does so in the “quarries” of football with a view towards Missionary October or World Mission Day.
Robert Farrugia from Missio Malta, head of communication, fundraising and communication, said, “Through Socktober, we want to reach kids who attend football schools, and communicate with ’em through a medium they know, the ball.” We want to share stories with them about children who, in different parts of the world, create balls from the most diverse materials. This project should be fun and raise awareness among young people.
“Socktober” aims to encourage children to consider the social contexts in their lives. It encourages them to look beyond their own horizons and be attentive to the needs of others.
The “Socktober” event is open to all children who attend football schools in Malta or Gozo and will take place between October and November. In the meantime, the quarries will host workshops where children can make their own “sock-ball” using recycled materials such as paper, cloth, and cardboard. (E.G.) (Agenzia Fides, 23/9/2022)
