ETIENE MARITZ, the executive director at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, said that Botswana and Namibia have yet to sign an accord allowing citizens to cross the border using their identity cards.

After President Hage Geingob announced, the two countries have agreed to allow their citizens to cross borders using identity documents and not passports.

Geingob met Mokgweetsi Maisi at theier bi-annual Commission meeting this week.

Maritz stated that they are still trying to negotiate an agreement on IDs as acceptable travel documents for citizens of the countries.

“Once the agreement is signed, the citizens of both countries will be informed about its implementation,” Maritz said.

Alfred Hengari, State House Press Secretary, said that although they have reached an agreement in principle that this will happen in the near future it is still in the final stages of paperwork.
