After three years of absence, the Namibian Newspaper Cup is back and Oshakati has prepared to put on a great event.

The Oshakati Independence Stadium was renovated and is now in great shape to host the 14 regions of Namibia who will compete in the long-running Under 20 football tournament. Philip Dala, the regional representative for Namibia Football Association, explained.

“The preparations are all in place and we cant wait for the Namibian Newspaper Cup to start. We expect a lot of people to attend because there are also other events in the North like the Ongwediva Trade Fair or some party political rallies. The Namibian Newspaper Cup is the most important, which has returned after three years. The people love the newspaper cup, they are very excited and can’t wait for it to start,” he said.

“The stadium was renovated with financial support from the Oshakati Town Council who came on board when we won the bid a few years ago. The grass was dead, but they fixed it up and now it looks beautiful,” he said, adding that the Oshakati Town Council has also built a new netball court for the netball tournament.

Tomorrow morning will see a street parade to the stadium. The tournament officially begins at 07h30, with the opening ceremony.

The action starts at 0815, when //Kharas face Kavango West. Group matches continue throughout the day until around 21h00 at night.

The group matches will continue Saturday, starting at 8h15. A women’s exhibition match between Oshana’s women’s team, and Tura Magic Ladies, will conclude the group stages at 17h00.

The evening’s entertainment will be concluded by the football semifinals. They will begin at 18h30, and end around 21h00.
