Libya opposes appointment of proposed new UN special envoy – The North Africa Post

Yesterday’s meeting of the UN Security Council was focused on Libyan security. The difficult issue of a new special representative to Libya was a topic of much discussion. The post was vacant eight months ago, when Jan Kubis, a Slovakian national, resigned.

The international community is divided and cannot agree on a new ambassador. This time, Libya has declared its opposition to Senegalese Abdoulaye Bathily being nominated.

Tripoli is asking for its opinion to be considered when the next envoy is selected. Its representative at the UN, Taher al Sonni, called for “serious and deep” prior discussions with the Libyans before proceeding with the vote, in order to avoid a last-minute failure.

“We want the special envoy to be African, but we will be more selective, we are looking for a more competent personality who knows the file,” he said. Tripoli has rejected the candidacy of Abdoulaye Bathily (Senegalese diplomat), who was presented to the Council members by Antonio Guterres UN Secretary General.

Instead, the government for national unity led Abdelhamid Dbeibah supports Sabri Boukadoum’s candidacy. He was refused by several countries including the USA and the United Arab Emirates.

Sabri Boukadoum is an expert on the Libyan file, and Dbeibah was received twice in Algiers despite being isolated internationally since December last year and having failed to organize elections.
