After voters voted to remove most incumbent MCAs from the Kitui County, the County Assembly will be home to a large number newcomers.

The majority of MCAs elected in 2017 were shown the door, with only four incumbents returned to the Kitui County Assembly in the hotly contested polls.

Peter Mwikya Kilonzo, County Assembly Majority leader, contested in Athi Ward to protect his seat on the Wiper Party. Kilonzo was defeated by Kieti Obothea, who received 3000 votes to Kilonzo’s 1600 votes.

The four people who were re-elected are Alex Nganga, Miambani (NARC), David Masaku and Mutomo Wards (Jubilee Party), Stephen Katana (Independent), Sylvester Munyalo (Matinyani Ward) and Sylvester Munyalo (NARC).

Mwingi Central constituency did not elect a MCA. The constituency is composed of 6 wards.

Judith Wanza was elected the only female member of County Assembly out of 40 MCAs who were elected in the just concluded general elections. This means that political parties should nominate more women to Kitui’s county assembly in order to achieve the two-third gender rule.
