President Cyril Ramaphosa has assured residents of the Sedibeng District Municipality in Gauteng of government’s commitment to combat widespread poverty in the district by unlocking the economic potential of this already important industrial centre.

The President set out this vision during his interaction with residents as part of the fourth Presidential Imbizo of 2022, during which the President assessed implementation of the “One District. One Plan” approach under the District Development Model.

Residents had the opportunity to raise issues such as crime, unemployment, and service delivery at the Sharpeville Cricket Stadium and to hear the responses of leaders from the national and provincial spheres.

President Ramaphosa was accompanied on the trip by a team consisting of Ministers and Vice Ministers, District Champions and Mayors. These officials responded to all concerns and noted matters for further investigation.

The Sedibeng district municipality includes the Emfuleni and Midvaal local municipalities. These municipalities are trying to address issues such as high unemployment and an ageing water and sanitation infrastructure that causes sewer blockages, spillages and leakages, pump station breakdowns, pipe bursts, and water stations breaking down.

The President thanked Sedibeng communities for constructive criticism during the Imbizo and assured residents that government would address the many issues they raised.

The President appealed to communities to stop vandalizing infrastructure and facilities and to take pride and care in maintaining a clean environment for all.

The Imbizo will be followed by the return of the respective Ministers, Ministers, Deputy Ministers MECs Mayors and officials to Sedibeng, as well other province districts, to report on the progress made.
