The European Union has reached out the Kingdom of Morocco to discuss investment options in the Morocco Nigeria gas pipeline project. It will connect up to Spain in an effort to replace Russia’s use of its gas as a political weapon.

This was after President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria called on the United Kingdom and European Union to invest in the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipe in order to address the energy crisis and provide energy security for African nations. Local Al Ahdath Al Maghribia reported that this Tuesday, August 9.

The Nigerian leader, the daily in Arabic noted, invited Europeans to establish a long-term partnership in order to concretize “this project which would help to solve the energy crisis situation in the Old Continent”. As the EU seeks Russia to become its largest gas supplier, the EU has been more interested in the Morocco/Nigeria project.

In response to western sanctions, Vladimir Putin, Russian President, has cut gas supplies to Europe.

Morocco and Nigeria launched in 2017 an off-shore project that will help 13 African countries. It is a strategic undertaking to regional integration in West Africa and will have positive effects on the socio-economic growth of all countries in the region.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) supports the project as a regional cooperation and energy diversification initiative in West Africa.

Morocco and Nigeria held talks about the project in Rabat, June 1, on the sidelines to the 1st ministerial meeting for Atlantic African States. This was attended by Nigerian FM Geoffrey Onyeama.
