The Student Union of Namibia (SUN), has proposed that a module on driving schools be integrated into practical lessons at tertiary education institutions.

Victoria Nehale, a postgraduate representative at SUN, presented the proposal during a press conference held on Thursday.

Nehale said that the key stakeholders in making this a reality were the tertiary colleges in Namibia, Namibian Qualifications Authority, Ministry of Works and Transport, and Ministry of Higher Education.

Nehale says that this initiative aims to allow young people offering driving lessons for the public to register vehicles with different institutions so that they can give practical driving lessons.

“The reason we want to bring it to academic institutions is because the content of training programmes in driving schools should be based on empirical data and focus on those psychomotor, cognitive and perceptual mental disabilities which are associated with high accident rates for novice drivers,” she said.

Nehale also stated that the curriculum should demonstrate safety practices in order to motivate young drivers into safe driving habits.
