Mogadishu (SONNA). The police component of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia has been bolstered with 160 officers from the Nigerian Formed Police Unit. They will support the Somali Police Force in line the Somalia Transition Plan.

The incoming contingent will replace the Nigerian Formed Police Unit 10, which recently returned home to Nigeria after completing a tour that included security for the recent presidential and parliamentary elections.

The UN Security Council Resolution states that the ATMIS Police component will consist of 1, 040 personnel, five Formed Police Units, and will keep this number until December 2024.

“These officers are well-trained and disciplined. They will fulfill the mandate that has been assigned to them, and will not fail their country or the African Union,” said Superintendent Mohammed Ibrahim, the contingent commander, when he received the officers on arrival in Mogadishu.

They are expected to support the SPF’s specialized training, advising, and mentorship, including joint patrols and protection for vital installations. They will also be assisting the Somali police with the delivery of services in Somalia.

Fidelix Jonah Anu, Deputy Superintendent, was the leader of the incoming team. She noted that NFPU-11 is well-equipped to fulfill its role in enhancing law order, the rule law, and efforts to restore peace, stability, and security in Somalia.

This is Nigeria’s eleventh police unit to be deployed to Somalia since 2012. These five operational sectors are covered by the police contributing countries (PCCs of ATMIS), which are Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria.
