AMERICA/BRAZIL – “The missio ad gentes formation of seminarians”: This is what is being discussed at the IV National Missionary Congress of Seminarians

Thursday, 14th of July 2022

João Pessoa (Agenzia Fides) – More than 350 participants are taking part in the 4th National Missionary Congress of Seminarians, known as 4Cominse, which began last Monday and will continue until next Sunday. The event was organized by the Pontifical Mission Societies, and by the national coordination of Missionary Councils of Seminarians.
The 4Cominse is open to all, not just seminarians, but also guests, rectors, seminary formatators, bishops, and other clergy. These days are accompanied by the theme “Missio Ad Gentes in the Formation of Seminarians”. The motto is the biblical passage “You’ll be my witnesses to all ends of the earth” (Acts 1,8).
The primary objective of the project is to promote and improve the missionary formation in Brazil of future priests. This will ensure that their mission is central to formation, and help them to develop a genuine missionary spirit.
The initiative, which on Saturday includes a missionary experience in thirteen communities of the archdiocese of Paraíba, is supported by the collaboration of the Episcopal Commission for Missionary Action and Inter-Church Cooperation of the CNBB, the Episcopal Commission for Ordained Ministries, and the Consecrated Life by the CNBB, the Organization of Brazilian Seminaries and Institutes (OSIB) and the Conference of Religious of Brazil (CRB).
The Congress featured the following speakers: Father Dinh Anh Nguyen OFM Conv, Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Union PMU, Sr. Regina da Costa Pedro PIME Provincial Superior of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception Bishop Luiz Fernando Lisboa CP Bishop of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim ES, and Msgr. Antônio Luiz Catelan Ferreira, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro. 4Cominse’s “typical” days are marked by conferences, thematic panels, and sharing missionary experiences. The report of the Secretary General of the PMU on “Why is the missio Ad Gentes?” was opened last Tuesday by the report of 4Cominse. In light of Pope Francis’ message for World Mission Day 2022. Father Nguyen addressed the main question in his speech by referring to passages from Pope Francis’ message. He emphasized the need for all Christians to witness to Christ, the eternal reality of a mission to universal evangelization, and the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit. The Church’s missionary life was the focus of the first day’s reflections, which continued yesterday with an in-depth examination of the teachings from the Church’s Magisterium regarding the missio Ad Gentes.
