Lui (Agenzia Fides). – “True Revolutions are Born from Tenacious Work, From Sowing Day After Day in the midst Of Efforts, Sacrifices, and Commitment”, declared Don Dante Carraro on the occasion of the graduation ceremony for eight young men and women at Lui Hospital School in South Sudan.
The singing of “Mother & baby, our priority!” was followed by the chorus. The ten midwifery graduates were able to say: “I am ready and available to serve my community wherever it needs me,” said one of them.
Don Dante adds, “To hear about service and community, about caring for the poorest, is a revolution in South Sudan.”
Fides was informed by a note that the procession of undergraduates passed through Lui streets before the ceremony to invite the community to join in the celebration. “On the side, children with hoes were excited: they saw the possibility of turning from weapons to hoes into books.
It was a great feast, joy, an explosion of live, a song of freedom, which spread in the courtyard of Lui’s Institute of Health Sciences under the scorching sun.
CUAMM Director addressed a special thought in gratitude to three Ugandan midwives who responded to CUAMM’s request to move to a country closer to them, in more need, and in severe difficulty, such as South Sudan. Don Dante said, “It is Africa who helps Africa.”
“The new graduates represent the sign of hope that doesn’t give in, that resists even difficult contexts that put them to the test: South Sudan’s institution crisis, still seeking peace; drought that dries out the soil; war in Ukraine that dramatically raises the prices for basic necessities as well oil and gas prices. It is a hidden war that is not being talked about and that is having a significant impact on the most vulnerable. The situation has gotten extremely dire over the past few weeks. The country is on the brink of collapse and the government is unable pay the wages for health workers or to guarantee medicines. The population is exhausted. “CUAMM and each one of us strongly feel a ‘duty’ of being there, artisans of goodness, humble and obstinate. Close to the poorest, through the help of everyone,” he concluded. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 13/7/2022)
