EUROPE/ITALY – The first two non-priestly Camillian religious elected provincial superiors

Rome (Agenzia Fides) – They are Brother Carlo Mangione and Brother José Carlos Bermejo Higuera. The two Camillians are non-clerical religious “brothers” and have been appointed provincial superiors of the Order of Ministers of the Sick, MI respectively of the Sicilian–Neapolitan Province and the province of Spain. According to Agenzia Fides, Father Pedro Tramontin, a recently elected Superior General, was appointed to the post on June 20. He received the written permission from Dicastery for Religious. Brother Carlo Mangione, General Director of the Santa Maria della Pietà Hospital in Casoria, is now in charge of the Casa della Speranza in the municipality of Naples. The structure is a lay Christian association, inspired by St. Camillus and other Camillians, for the benefit of disadvantaged families, women victim of violence, the sick, marginalized, homeless, and the sick.
For his part, Brother José Carlos Bermejo Higuera is the Director of the Humanization Center for Health in Madrid. This appointment was possible due to a dispensation Pope Francis made into the code canon law on May 18, 2022. The Camillians were among those who first requested written permission from Dicastery for Religious to appoint non-clerical religious brothers as provincial superiors. It is worth noting that the Constitution of the MI states: “Our Order, listed in the Church among the Clerical Institutes, is composed of people united through the bond of profession, called according tradition, fathers or brothers. They are of equal dignity and have the same rights and obligations except those derived form sacred order. Perpetual vows holders have both active and passive voices.
