UN Advisor for Libya Stephanie Williams invited Khalid al Mishri, the head of High Council of State (HCS), to meet with Aqila Saleh, the President of House of Representatives (HoR), to discuss ways to end the impasse and reach consensus on the organization of elections.

Al-Mishri’s media office posted the invitation on its website, but the Libyan official indicated that he would consider the significance of the visit to Egypt for the meeting and its impact on resolving entanglements in Libya, especially the deadlock in the political track.

According to his office, Al Mishri believes that the visit is not the target, but the seriousness and commitment of the other party (Saleh), especially in the pursuit of a national consensus to end the transitional phase by restoring political legitimacy through elections as soon as possible.

Two rival Prime Ministers are currently in Libya, one backed by the HCS and the other by HoR. The rivalry between the two chambers has fueled the division in the oil rich African country, which did not hold UN-backed elections on December 24th.

Williams, who is due to leave office at the end this month, has been bringing different sides together to work on a common pathway towards elections.

Although the date of the meeting is not known, Saleh met with Mohammed Menfi on Wednesday in Cairo.

Menfi’s spokesperson Najwa Weheba said the meeting discussed the need for the success of constitutional talks in Cairo between the HoR and High Council of State.
