Former Civil-Society Groups leader dies in Mogadishu – Somali National News Agency

Mogadishu(SONNA)-Former Civil-Society Groups leader and peace activist, Professor Abdullahi Mohamed Shirwa died after days of uncertain illness here in Mogadishu, his family, Government officials confirmed Sunday.

Somali scholars, journalists, and peace activists expressed deep sorrow at his passing. They also shared condolences through social media platforms, reminiscing about his role in peace efforts to allow people to come together in Somalia.

” The death of Abdullahi Mohamed Shirwa is a big loss for Somalia. I covered his peace efforts to bring people closer many years ago. He was selfless. Recently he led the team that collected $4.4M for for the victims of Zope explosion which helped 1000s including 1,547 orphans”, Harun Maruf, a VOA journalist said on twitter post.

Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimu, Somali lawmaker said that the country had lost a valued person who spent most of his life helping vulnerable Somalis. He said that the country will always remember Abdullahi Mohammed Shirwa’s dedication and efforts, and wished Allah to grant him Jannah.

Government ministers and other members of the community also expressed grief over the death of the deceased leader and it is expected  to have his funeral service held and berried here in Mogadishu today on Sunday.
