Bahrain reiterated its support for the Moroccanness in the Sahara and the sovereignty of the North African kingdom, a support that was reflected in the establishment of a Consulate General at Laayoune.

After talks between the Bahraini-Moroccan Foreign Ministers Abdullatif Bin Rashid Al Zayani, and Nasser Bourita, this joint statement was issued Tuesday in Marrakech.

The minister from Bahrain stressed that the support of his country for the Moroccanness in the Sahara was crowned in December 2020 by the opening a Consulate General to the Kingdom of Bahrain in Laayoune.

In the joint statement, the Bahraini foreign minister was quoted as saying that the UN and other international organizations and forums continue to support this unwavering support.

Bourita, on the other hand, reiterated the support of Morocco under King Mohammed VI to Bahrain to face any interference and any attempt to undermine its security and stability.

They expressed deep satisfaction with the support they received from the two kingdoms in relation to their candidacies to positions and membership in international or regional organizations. They also stressed the importance of maintaining this path to ensure a strong presence of the brotherly countries within these organizations and to serve their national interests as well as those of the Arab region.

The meeting discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and address international and regional mutual concerns.

The parties underlined the importance of holding the 5th session in this year of the Moroccan-Bahraini High Joint Commission, which will be held under the sign of the transition into a qualitative cooperation stage. This stage will see the participation of governmental institutions as well as fundamental investments. It will focus on strategic priority sector and aim at achievable projects that have a tangible impact on development and can directly impact on the country’s progress.

In a related development, Niger has also welcomed Morocco’s efforts to settle the Sahara issue, within the framework of the UN-led political process.

Nigerien Foreign Minister, Hassoumi Massaoudou, actually reiterated his country’s support for the political process carried out under the exclusive aegis of the United Nations for the settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
“Niger supports the position of the African Union, which enshrines the exclusivity of the United Nations as a framework for the search for a solution to the regional conflict over the Sahara issue”, underlined Mr. Massaoudou at the end of talks with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, in marrakech.

In July 2018, Nouakchott saw the AU Summit adopt Decision 693, which enshrines UN exclusivity as a framework for the search to resolve the regional conflict over the Moroccan Sahara question.
