Taufiq Balala, the Mombasa County Transport and Infrastructure Executive, announced changes to traffic routes for Mombasa motorists, effective today, Wednesday 2, 2022, in an effort to reduce congestion.

Speaking at his office in Mombasa, the CEC said, “Starting today at 5am Mombasa will unveil new routes entering and exiting town, in a bid to eradicate traffic jams. These new rules were developed after a lot of consultation with the relevant stakeholders in the transport sector,” said Balala.

Four roads will be affected, including Digo, Jomo Kenya round-about to Saba Saba Roads, Sheikh Abdallah Farsi, and Ronald Ngala roads.

He stated that traffic marshals would be stationed in different sections to help the over 10,000 motorists who enter or leave the Mombasa Central Business District.

The changes will see all motorists entering CBD using Digo road from Buxton to Kenya ferry using one lanes, while those exiting CBD must use Saba Saba route until they reach Nyali Bridge.

“We expect that all the public service vehicles will adhere to the set guidelines for the smooth flow of traffic, we have engaged all the relevant stakeholders and we will continue to sensitize them on the need to use the new routes,” said Balala.

Balala stated that drivers might have a difficult first week. Therefore, authorities have instructed traffic officers to be gentle with motorists as they adjust.

Peter Maina, Coast Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer, said that the decision was made after much brainstorming and consultations about how to fix traffic congestion.

Maina said that the police traffic department was optimistic that the move will meet their goal, adding, “We have enough officers to guide motorists on the ground. We will also help them to become more familiar with the new routes. We are hopeful we will make it,” he said.
