Mandera County is on high alert over fears of a cholera outbreak after the main business\u00a0place was slowly becoming a health hazard.<\/p>\n
Known to Locals as\u00a0Mandera\u2019s bus park\u00a0a\u00a0business premises inhabited by 1000 people all-in small-scale trading activities, residents\u00a0are unhappy with the current state of the\u00a0market.<\/p>\n
The area has no toilets, water services with piles of garbage scattered in the vicinity putting\u00a0residents\u00a0on the line for cholera disease outbreak.<\/p>\n
According to the residents,\u00a0piles of garbage\u2019s\u00a0have for months been mounting in the market with an awful stench, making life a living hell for traders and customers.<\/p>\n
Residents are now in danger and are appealing to Mandera East Sub County Municipal Council to improve the sanitary condition in the market.<\/p>\n
Mohamed Hussein, a trader in the market said the situation at the market\u00a0had become part of\u00a0our daily routine,\u00a0which is\u00a0unfortunate.<\/p>\n
He added if the municipal council will not provide proper garbage disposal at market\u00a0deadly diseases like cholera could easily spread\u00a0in the market and beyond adding that the market serves a large population spread all over the county.<\/p>\n
Over\u00a030 women sell uncovered food items\u00a0with no legal documents from the government.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0traders at the Mandera bus park market\u00a0want the relevant authorities to sort out the mess to avoid a catastrophe\u00a0by improving the hygiene conditions in the area as well as the places where food is sold by removing the waste to reduce the risk of getting the infection.<\/p>\n
Mandera County Health CEC Mohamud Eda\u00a0said surveillance in the county has been heightened to ensure adequate response in case of an outbreak.<\/p>\n
The county health department has this week sent to Nairobi hospitals three samples of stool suspected\u00a0containing cholera virus.<\/p>\n
Cholera is a fast-dehydrating diarrheal illness that can be caused by drinking water or eating food contaminated with a toxic serogroup of bacteria. Vibrio cholerae<\/em>.<\/p>\n Cholera is a disease that has a short incubation time of between 12 hours and five days. The virulence of Cholera can cause rapid patient deterioration, or other explosive cholera outbreaks.<\/p>\n Within hours of symptom onset, an otherwise healthy person can become severely dehydrated, electrolyte depleted, or even in shock. If not treated promptly, the patient may die within\u00a01-3\u00a0hours.<\/p>\n
