{"id":58011,"date":"2022-09-23T09:32:40","date_gmt":"2022-09-23T09:32:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africannewspaper.net\/2022\/09\/23\/stakeholders-asked-to-renew-fight-against-fgm-kenya-news-agency\/"},"modified":"2022-09-23T09:33:13","modified_gmt":"2022-09-23T09:33:13","slug":"stakeholders-asked-to-renew-fight-against-fgm-kenya-news-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africannewspaper.net\/2022\/09\/23\/stakeholders-asked-to-renew-fight-against-fgm-kenya-news-agency\/","title":{"rendered":"Stakeholders asked to renew fight against FGM \u2013 Kenya News Agency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p>FGM in Kenya is a complex problem that requires multi-faceted collaboration and collaboration from all parties.<\/p>\n<p>According to Jackson Sokoine, Director, Maasai Transformation Organisation (MATRO), a Non-Governmental Organization,\u00a0total eradication of the vice needs concerted efforts among stakeholders as the practice is deeply rooted in culture.<\/p>\n<p>Sokoine, who was speaking in Rombo Kajiado South during a community leaders\u2019 sensitisation meeting against FGM, noted despite FGM being outlawed in Kenya in 2011, the act still continues\u00a0among some communities albeit in secrecy to evade the law.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Kenya Demographic and Health Survey\u00a0(2014-2015),\u00a021\u00a0per cent of women and girls, aged 15-49, have undergone some form of\u00a0FGM and 3 out\u00a0of\u00a010 girls\u00a0in\u00a0Kenya today face the risk\u00a0of\u00a0undergoing\u00a0FGM.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt 78%, the FGM prevalence rate in Kajiado County is among the highest in Kenya,\u201d Sokoine revealed adding perpetrators had resorted to sneaking girls out of the country to Tanzania through the border at Tarakea and Loitokitok where they undergo the cut before they are sneaked back in, hampering efforts to fight the vice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEradication of FGM needs concerted efforts and collaboration among all stakeholders. The vice is still rampant especially among pastoralists communities despite it being outlawed in Kenya in 2011 and is now even done across borders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Director noted\u00a0that efforts to eradicate the \u2018cut\u2019 has been greatly hampered by\u00a0lack of education,\u00a0a conspiracy of silence\u00a0by the community\u00a0and resistance to change.<\/p>\n<p>He urged Maasai Community members to end outdated cultural practices, such as FGM or early marriages, which continue to violate the rights and dignity of women and girls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce a girl undergoes FGM she is considered ready for marriage thus is unable to continue with her education. It is a high time these outdated cultural practices are done away with as they have no value,\u201d said Sokoine.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Sankaine, MATRO Programme Coordinator, echoed Sokoine\u2019s sentiments adding that community\u00a0dialogues have helped to sustain momentum in the fight against FGM.<\/p>\n<p>Sankaine revealed that women, youth, elders, and morans were all involved in community dialogues and being exposed to harmful cultural practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are involving the youth, morans, women and men in community dialogues and sensitisation programmes. Men being the decision makers in the families are able to stop their daughters from undergoing FGM, while morans are encouraged to marry uncircumcised girls,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Risper Kitur, Assistant Country Commissioner, Rombo Division, said that cross-border FGM is a problem because girls are often smuggled out of the country by the porous border under the pretense of visiting relatives in Tanzania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGirls are\u00a0sneaked\u00a0using boda boda operators at night\u00a0through\u00a0the border\u00a0to Tanzania\u00a0where they are cut and stay there until they heal before returning to\u00a0Kenya.
