Katima Mulilo Town Council allocated N$9.9 million to the rehabilitation of Lifasi/Kapelwa Kabajani streets.

Many motorists have driven on roads with recurring potholes for many years. This is due to a lack of maintenance or annual rains.

The rehabilitation of both roads will begin next week, after Lister Shamalaza, the town mayor, handed the site to Ashy Trading CC.

Shamalaza highlighted the main barriers to the town’s economic potential as poor roads and stormwater drains during the site handover ceremony.

“The 900-metre road construction project will consist of a much-needed storm water drainage system, and about 400-metre of it will be double lane, while the remaining portion up to the end of Kabajani Street will continue as a single lane,” he said.

Shamalaza says that the project will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will cost N$3,9million. This amount was sourced from Road Fund Administration for the current fiscal year.

He stated that the Road Fund Administration and the Town Council will finance the second phase in the 2023/24 fiscal year.

Kennedy Simasiku from Katima Urban constituency spoke at the event. He stated that they are looking for funds for the tarring at least five kilometres in the town roads.

He described the rehabilitation work of the Lifasi-Kababani roads as a significant step towards the town’s growth. He stated that more such developments would ensure that they not only deliver on their promises, but also serve as leaders.

“I call on the contractor to deliver quality work to guarantee the use of these roads for many years without the need for major repairs,” he said.
