The Secretary General is closely following the demonstrations that took place in several cities of Libya, including Tripoli (Tobruk) and Benghazi on the 1st July.

Recognizing the rights to peaceful demonstrations, he appeals to all protestors not to use violence and to the security forces for their maximum restraint.

The Secretary-General urges all actors to refrain any actions that could threaten stability. The Secretary-General urges Libyan actors to come together to overcome the continued political deadlock, which is deepening divisions and negatively impacting the country’s economy.

The United Nations and the Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams, are available to provide good offices and mediation between parties to chart a way out of the political deadlock through the organization of elections based on a firm constitutional framework as soon as possible. The recent UN meetings in Cairo, Geneva and other locations have made great progress. This should be continued.
