SONNA – The special envoy of the President of the Federal Government of Somalia for Drought Relief, urged the international donors to respond urgently to the relief of the drought which is leading to famine in Somalia.

The governments of Italy, the United States and Qatar organized the conference on the response to the drought in Horn of Africa. More than 30 countries participated, including the Islamic Organization, Arab League, African Union and other organizations of the United Nations and International Aid.

The delegation thanked all governments that offered donations, and especially the United States government for its $150 million donation in advance.

The Head of USAID Ms. Samantha Power from the British Government, Minister for International Development, attended the meeting. Hon. Vicky Ford, Deputy Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy E. Ms. Marina Sereni Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Qatar Abdiaziz al-Khulayfi Deputy Secretary General United Nations for humanitarian assistance and emergency response Martin Griffiths David Miliban, former British Foreign Minister, coordinated the conference. The meeting was attended by Oxform, ICRC and WFP leaders, IOM, IRC, and WFP.
