Emery Bayisenge’s disallowed goal sparks controversy in Bangladesh

Saif Sporting Club managing director, Nasirudin Chowdhury, is demanding that only foreign referees should be appointed by the country’s football federation to officiate tough games in the impending season after Emery Bayisenge’s penalty goal in semi-finals of the League Cup last Wednesday against Abahani was controversially disallowed.

On Sunday, January 10, 2022 at a Press Conference, the Saif SC boss commented that the Bayisenge goal was clear from the penalty spot. He didn’t know why Saymon Hasan, the referee, disallowed it. His side went on to lose in shootouts, after the regular time ended 3-3.

“The referee claimed Bayisenge illegally feigned that he kicked the ball after he had completed a run-up. Bayisenge waited a second, then kicked to score. He considers it an infringement of Law 14 as well as unsporting behavior and must caution the player. Chowdhury stated, “We believe the goal should have stood.”

“The appointment of foreign referees to the league matches is not a demand only. It’s a demand from 30 clubs, I believe. We don’t need expensive referees. Rather, we think that the football federation could hire referees in India, Nepal, and Maldives.” he said.

Bayisenge, who joined Saif from AS Kigali in October 2021, is currently one the biggest stars in the Bangladeshi Premier League.

After previously playing for the club during the 2018/2019 season, this is his second stint with them.
