ASIA/HOLYLAND – Heads of Churches and Patriarchs in Jerusalem express their gratitude to King Abdullah II as “Custodian”, of Christian and Muslim Holy Sites

Jerusalem (Agenzia Fides – King Abdullah II spoke at the UN General Assembly recently and described in a “truthful” and honest manner the reality of Christian communities in Jerusalem, and the Holy Land. The Patriarchs of Jerusalem and Heads of Churches of Jerusalem recognize the Hashemite Monoarch and express their gratitude to King Abdullah by giving him the traditional title of “Custodian Christian and Muslim Holy Sites” in Jesus’ homeland. The Heads and Heads of the Churches expressed appreciation for the words that the Sovereign used to confirm his commitment to the preservation of the historical status quo that governs coexistence among the different faith communities in Jerusalem in the face of new “dangers” which threaten the historical heritage of Christianity in the Holy City.
” As custodians of Jerusalem’s Muslim and Christian holy sites”, he king said, at the 77th annual UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday 20 September “we are committed to protecting the historical and legal status quo and to their safety and future… And as a Muslim leader”, added the Hashemite Monarch “let me say clearly, that we are committed to defending the rights, precious heritage and historic identity of the Christian people of our region”.
King Abdullah described Christianity as “vital” to the past and future of his region and the Holy Land, and said that the Christian contribution “must remain an integral component of our future”. (GV) (Agenzia Fides, 28/9/2022)
