Stephen Cheboi Chairman of the National Council of Non-Governmental Organizations has condemned the insecurity prevailing Turkana, which led to the death of 11 people, eight of them police officers.

Speaking to the press in Nyayo House’s office, the chairman urged the government to act and intervene.

“We as an organization are concerned that in this time and era we still have people in this country that can kill people, cattle rustling is an outdated practice and it should be put to an end. As a National Council of NGOs, we strongly say this must stop,” said Cheboi.

Cheboi stated, “The new government should stop the killings.”

“If an armed police officer can be killed, what about innocent citizens? Eight soldiers being killed is not something to celebrate. In fact, it is a sad day for the state. The president should ensure the culprits are brought to book and crude weapons confiscated,” Cheboi maintained.

He said that the Council was confident about the current administration, considering the president’s statements on bringing peace to the affected regions and Kenya as a whole.

Cheboi offered condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected, saying that nothing should happen to Kenyans as Kerio Valley is part of Kenya.

“Kenya is holding a position as a member of the United Nations Security Council and still has issues internally. We urge others to work with the government to ensure peace.” he said.

Cheboi stated that they, as a National Council of NGOs are working with stakeholders and organizations to educate the public about security and urged other organizations not to forget to work with the government for peace.

During the presser, the Chairman spoke on the drought situation in Kenya and said that no one should die from hunger.

“Just like we are condemning cattle rustling and banditry, we cannot allow somebody to die from the lack of food, let the government address the issue of lack of food and drought situation in Kenya. We should produce enough food to feed such areas,” Cheboi urged.

He stated that they, as the Council of NGOs are available to work with the government in solving socio-economic problems.
