Yangon (Agenzia Fides – “Today, the Catholic community in Myanmar lives under a terrible climate of violence.” The fighting is not stopping. The situation is precarious and difficult. The people are exhausted by the violence that continues,” said Noel Saw Naw Aye to Fides, the Auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese Yangon. “We Bishops are also at the head the community of baptized and are in an extremely difficult situation. On the one hand, we must deal with the military, on the second we have the responsibility to take care the sufferings, requests and needs of people. We are always there for the people, but we must also dialogue with the army leaders and political leaders to avoid more suffering and violence against the population,” explained the Auxiliary Bishop of Fides.
“As Catholics we are all united against violence and war, we try and preach and live evangelical peace, reconciliation, non-violence, and reconciliation”, he states. He demands that schools, churches, social institutions, refugee reception centers, and other places of worship be spared from the fighting.
The Burmese Catholic community praised Pope Francis for his appeal to peace yesterday, September 25.
“We see that in today’s world there is a trend for bombing schools”, Pope Francis said yesterday during the Angelus delivered at the end of Mass at the stadium of Matera (Italy), at the conclusion of the National Eucharistic Congress. Francis said that he thought “in particular” to Myanmar’s problems and that he was aware of the “forty-two years that noble country has been ravaged by violent armed clashes and violence that have left many people homeless and dead. I heard this week the grief expressed by children who died in a school explosion. We see that in today’s world there is a trend for bombing schools”, added the Pontiff, hoping that “the cry of these little ones not go unheard!” (PA) (Agenzia Fides, 26/9/2022)
