Through its humanitarian bodies and in cooperation avec the Somali Disaster Management Authority, (SoDMA), and other authorities, the UAE continues to distribute aid in the areas most affected by drought, including Mahas & Mataban regions in Hiran Governorate and Hirshabelle State.

This aid is part in efforts to distribute more 1,000 tonnes of humanitarian supplies to the Somali population. It was transported by Emirati aid ships to Mogadishu to meet the needs of the approximately 2.5 million people who have been affected by the drought.

Food and relief supplies have been distributed to more than 1,330 displaced and affected families in the Bal’ad District in Hirshabelle State, more than 400 families in the city of Hudur, and 470 families in Baidoa, the capital of the southwestern region of Somalia. This aid is part a plan to distribute relief supplies with the Somali ministries and agencies, including the Somali Disaster Management Agency.

Somalia is the Horn of Africa country most affected by the drought. Somalia is experiencing its worst drought in decades. There is concern that the drought will turn into a crisis of food security. According to the United Nations World Meteorological Organization, Somalia will face a fifth consecutive year of drought.

According to estimates by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than seven million Somalis are facing  humanitarian challenges and require food aid.
