A meeting was held in Rabat on Thursday to discuss security cooperation between Spain and Morocco as well as ways to improve this cooperation to enhance the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The meeting included Abdellatif Hammouchi as Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance and Esperanza Castleeiro Llamazares as Secretary of State and Head of Spain’s National Intelligence Center.

This meeting took places on the sidelines of Ms. CasteleiroLlamazares’s working visit to Morocco as the head of a high level delegation. The purpose of this visit was to support and enhance Moroccan-Spanish cooperation in security areas of mutual interest, according to a press release by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance.

The press release stated that Hammouchi and Ms. Casteleiro Llamazares examined the different models and dimensions of security cooperation between Spain and Morocco, and suggested ways to develop this cooperation to match their strategic partnership and meet the needs for availability and efficiency to maintain common security in an environment of increasing security threats at both national and international levels.

This meeting reflects the strength of Moroccan-Spanish collaboration in security and intelligence, especially in light the challenges associated with the region that continue to grow, and the risks related to terrorism, extremeism and various forms cross-border organized crime including illegal immigration networks and drug trafficking and psychotropic substances, the DGST stated in a press statement.
